Severe Weather
It's always our hope for learning to continue unless it is unsafe to do so. We continually monitor the forecast from the National Weather Service and consult with local authorities when making decisions.
In the event that conditions are hazardous:
-
Our team monitors the weather and its potential impact on transportation and operations.
- The superintendent makes the final decision based on the following factors:
- safety and well-being of students and staff,
- severity of the weather (extreme cold, flooding, hazardous road conditions, etc.),
- timing of the weather (overnight, during the school day, etc.) and
- ability of buses and cars to travel safely.
Our Communication Plan
We try to make our decision of whether or not to hold classes as early as possible in the morning, or even the night before, to give our students and families time to make alternate plans for the day.
If the decision is made to close schools, there are several ways families will be informed.
Order of Communication Plan
First, we will use our mass notification system to notify families and all staff members of the closure. If parents have difficulty receiving these updates or need to update their contact information, we ask that they please reach out to their child's school. RPSB employees can log into their ALIO account to update information.
Additionally, we will post notifications on our website; our district Facebook page; and the @rapidesschools X/Twitter account. We will also alert local media outlets, including TV and radio stations.

Dear RPSB Families,
We are aware of extreme cold weather conditions expected to impact our area beginning Sunday evening and continuing through Monday morning. It is expected that temperatures will drop again Monday night and Tuesday morning, as well.
While any shower activity will clear out well before the cold air arrives (meaning no ice or freezing precipitation is expected), gusty winds Sunday afternoon will bring very cold temperatures. Nearly all of our district will experience subfreezing conditions Sunday and Monday night, with wind chills dropping into the 20s and potentially the teens.
We will continue to monitor the weather and will share updates as we have more information.
Important Reminder: Students are encouraged to wear additional warm clothing layers to school on Monday and Tuesday to ensure their comfort and safety. This includes coats, gloves, leggings and other cold-weather gear as needed.
