Placement Testing for Incoming Students

Is your child transferring to Rapides Parish Schools for the 2026-2027 school year?  Please review the information below to see if your child will need to be scheduled for a placement test prior to starting school.

State Placement Test (enrolling in Grade 5 or 9)

Your students must take the State Placement Test (English Language Arts and Math) if they are enrolling in grade 5 or grade 9 and are transferring from one of the following:

  • An in-state nonpublic school
  • A home study program
  • An out-of-state school

The State Placement Test is to inform grade placement decisions and academic support that students may need.  More information about the State Placement Test can be found in the Parent Guide to the State Placement Test.

Note:  Students enrolling in grade 5 or grade 9 who attended a Louisiana public school last year, but did not take the spring LEAP test for any reason, are also required to take the State Placement Test.

The state placement test is administered by the RPSB Assessment, Accountability, and Analytics Department on select dates. Testing sessions will take place at the Rapides Parish School Board Media Center at 502 Beauregard St., Alexandria, LA.  Schedule your child's placement test by completing the online registration form linked below:

Local Placement Test (enrolling in Grade 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 7, 8, 10, 11, 12)

Your students must take a local placement test if they are enrolling in grades 1-4. 6-8 and 10-12 from one of the following:

  • A non-approved, nonpublic school
  • A home study program

The Local Placement Test for students enrolling in grades 1-4 and 6-8 is to inform grade placement decisions and help determine academic support students may need.

Note:  Students enrolling in grade 1 who did not complete kindergarten also require local placement testing.

The Local Placement Test for students enrolling for students enrolling in grades 10, 11, or 12  is to determine which credits will be awarded.  Transcripts must be provided for incoming students transferring to one of our high schools.

Local placement tests are administered at the school sites.  To schedule local placement testing, please contact the school your child will attend.

For questions regarding placement testing, contact Addie Thompson, District Test Coordinator, via email addie.thompson@rpsb.us. If academic records are not provided or available, students will be assessed based on their age and expected grade level. Placement decisions will then be made in accordance with the RPSB Pupil Progression Plan.
