McKinney-Vento/Homeless
The McKinney-Vento Educational Program identifies children and youth and removes any barriers preventing them from attending school. Social Service agencies collaborate with the Rapides Parish School Board to develop and implement programs that will enhance the education of McKinney-Vento families. You can apply here
Who is considered McKinney-Vento?
The term "homeless children and youth" means individuals who lack a fixed, regular, and adequate nighttime residence and includes those:
- Living in an emergency shelter or transitional housing
- Abandoned in hospitals
- Living in motels, hotels, trailer parks, or campgrounds due to a lack of adequate alternative accommodations
- Living in cars, parks, public spaces, abandoned buildings, substandard housing, bus or train stations or similar settings
- "Doubled up" living with friends or family due to the loss of housing, economic hardship, or a similar reason
- An "unaccompanied youth", not in the physical custody of a parent or guardian
- Migrant children living in these conditions

Step 1

Step 2
Wait for the MKV Liaison to reach out to you and confirm you have been approved or denied for MKV. Once the contact has been made with you by the MKV Liaison, proceed to the next step.
Step 3
If you are new to the district and did not complete the previous school year (May 2026) in a Rapides Parish School, complete New Student Registration. If you are currently enrolled in a Rapides Parish School, then you will need to fill out a Transfer Request and any additional information that the school might need.
