Rapides Academy for Advanced Academics and Virtual Learning is Rapides Parish's academic magnet middle school. We accept applications annually during the month of February. Rapides Academy for Advanced Academics consists of students in grades 6-8 and offers an accelerated and rigorous high school prep curriculum. Our academic program provides students with the knowledge and social skills necessary to successfully transition to advanced high school courses, and our rich variety of electives meets the needs of a diverse group of students.  Since learning with technology is a priority in our classrooms, each classroom is equipped with a Promethean board and a classroom set of Google Chromebooks. Using technology in our classrooms helps students build skills in critical thinking, verbal and written communication, and group problem solving.  We have programs for gifted and talented students, and we offer challenging high school credit courses. Enrichment electives such as Robotics, Digital Media, Drama, Keyboarding, Journey to Careers, and Genius Hour serve to enhance the educational experience for our students.

 House Systems at Rapides Academy

It shall be the policy of the Rapides Parish School Board to grant Magnet/Montessori transfers for students who have applied and met the acceptance requirements and student selection procedures set forth by the Rapides Parish School Board.  A race-neutral student selection process will be used to select a diverse student population in all Magnet/Montessori schools.  The process will ensure diversity by selecting students from different socio-economic backgrounds and career/academic interests.

Students attending a Magnet/Montessori school outside their attendance zone will be granted absolute priority to continue attending that Magnet/Montessori school as long as they meet the published requirements for remaining in the program.

Each year, district officials will use a race-neutral student selection process to fill vacancies from an applicant pool that is designed to promote diversity among student populations in Magnet/Montessori schools.

All Phoenix Magnet students who are in good standing will automatically be accepted into Rapides Academy for Advanced Academics and Virtual Learning (RAAAVL).

For new applicants to be considered for acceptance to Rapides Academy for Advanced Academics and Virtual Learning, a student must meet the following academic eligibility requirements.

  • 6th – 8th Grade:  GPA of 2.5 on the final report card of the previous grade, scores of basic or above in ELA, math, science, and social studies on the LEAP 2025 assessment, and a passing score of 80% on the entrance exam.

Per Board Policy JBCD - Student Transfer and Withdrawal

Vacancies will be determined by using the school’s capacity for each grade level.  Upon meeting the academic eligibility requirements, the following priorities will be used to select the students:

  • Priority #1 – Siblings of students currently enrolled in a Magnet program.
  • Priority #2 – All other applicants will be chosen based on a random number lottery system.

Magnet students will need to meet the following requirements to remain in the Magnet Programs:

  1. Maintain an overall 2.5 GPA
  2. Pass all classes
  3. No expulsion
  4. No more than 1 out-of-school suspension
  5. No more than 6 unexcused absences or tardies
