As we approach the start of the 2017-2018 school year, we enter a new era of accountability under the Every Student Succeeds Act. With that, the stakes for improved student achievement are once again raised. An achievement level of Basic on the state assessment will no longer be considered as the standard for proficiency. Mastery of the knowledge and skills needed to be successful at the next grade level will now be the new standard for proficiency.
Raising standards is critical in the preparation of students for college and career. It requires that we push them to ever-increasing levels of achievement to ensure that they are demonstrating the skill set necessary for success, i.e., the ability to think critically, solve complex problems, and to communicate effectively. Achieving this goal means that we must have strong, committed school leaders who have a clear vision for their schools, effective teachers in every classroom, students who are coming to school every day ready to learn, and parents who are willing to build strong home/school partnerships.
The key to success is through education - it is still the best avenue for prosperity. With that, the pursuit of higher education attainment has also taken on greater importance, as research indicates that by 2018 more than two-thirds of U.S. jobs will require a post-secondary degree or industry based credential.
To ensure that every child is prepared for success in college and career through quality instruction is our district's vision and mission. It is through a shared set of principles and guiding practices that we will realize our vision and ultimately lead to a future filled with hope and prosperity for every child.
