Welcome to Cherokee Elementary School!
The attractive school is located at 5700 Prescott Road in Alexandria, Louisiana.
Cherokee Elementary School, a one-story building, situated on a twelve acre site. In 1953 the school opened serving grades one through seven. In 1957 the organizational pattern changed to grades one through 6. In 1969 Cherokee became one of the first schools in Rapides Parish to begin a kindergarten program. Three years later, in order to accommodate this program, a red brick building with two classrooms was constructed.
The present school population has grown to 730 --- serving students in grades Pre-K through five with at least four sections of most grades. In addition, three inclusion Special Education and two gifted/talented classes are offered.
Cherokee’s Community for Learning:
The school is situated on a 12-acre site with 48 classrooms serving grades Pre-kindergarten through fifth grade.
Louisiana Department of Education awards each and every school in the state a School Performance Score (SPS) that reflects how well students are learning. Connections bring administrators, teachers, students, parents, and the community together for the purpose of learning in a climate that is communicative, disciplined, and caring.
Cherokee parents are partners through a strong Parent Club that supports the school financially and academically. Parents who are involved in their children’s education have a positive impact on students’ academic achievement, behavior in school, and good feelings about school and work.
Each Cherokee classroom grades K—5 are equipped with at least 4 wireless Netbooks that are used for learning programs such as EAGLE, Compass Learning, STAR Math, STAR Reading, Accelerated Math, MathFacts in a Flash, and Reading Renaissance Enterprise. Each grade level has its own multi-media cart equipped with a laptop and computer projector, and an Elmo document camera. Six upper-grade classrooms have Promethean Boards that allow students to actively participate during the lessons.
The school library owns over 9,000 books with 130,940 accompanying Accelerated Reader online quizzes. Parents can access their student’s account at http://hosted16.renlearn.com/212623/ When students come to the library each week for information skills instruction, they use the 24 library laptops or netbooks to research and format information. The library is open each day for student use from 7:55 AM until 8:25 AM when they can exchange books or use the library computers to take Accelerated Reader quizzes.
The Physical Education program consists of a daily exercise program needed for strong bodies. In addition, the Physical Education program includes an award winning co-ed basketball team, a cheerleading team, a Spring Fitness Meet, a running club, and a fitness-testing program.
